The trunk is usually located at the rear of the vehicle. Early designs had an external rack at the rear of the vehicle for attaching the trunk. Later designs integrated the storage area into the body and ended up being more streamlined. The main storage compartment is usually located at the end of the vehicle opposite the engine.
Some mid-engine or electric cars have trunks in the front and rear. Examples include the Volkswagen Type 3, Porsche 914, Porsche Boxster and Toyota MR2. The mid-engined Fiat X1/9 also has two storage compartments, although the trunk is small, easily accessible, and almost cuboid in shape.
The trunk of a rear-engined car like the Volkswagen Beetle or Porsche 911 is located in front of the passenger compartment.
Sometimes during the design life of the vehicle, the lid may be redesigned to increase the size or improve the practicality and utility of the trunk shape. Examples of this include the Beetle's redesign of the 1970s "Super Beetle" and the pre-war and 1950s Citroën traction pioneers.
