From the birth of the automobile to the present, the type of door has undergone many developments. Regular doors are the most exposed doors in our daily cars, but there are some doors you may not touch. The most common first.
ordinary door
This kind of door is the most common type now, also known as a straight door. At present, 95% of the models on the market from low to high price adopt this design. This door opening method conforms to the usage habits of the general public, with simple structure and convenient operation. Also, if the door is not closed during driving, it can still be closed by air pressure. Usually the biggest difference of this kind of door is the design of the door handle, so I won't talk about it here.
opposite door
This type of door is believed to be seen by many people in classic cars and luxury cars. The structure is that the rear end of the door is used as the axis to open backwards. The advantage of this type of door opening is that there is a larger gap. The Rolls Royce we are familiar with is a fan of this kind of door. Even the two-door models are designed to open against each other.
Door to door has a long history, most of the doors of early cars are this style, because it originated from the evolution of traditional carriages, the previous cars were really very simple power + seat + wheels.
In addition, some side doors, such as Mazda MX-8, BMW i3, Opel Marina, etc. , cannot be opened independently at the rear door, only the front door can be opened first. From a structural point of view, just on the basis of the front door, a smaller door is added at the back. This design is suitable for smaller models, costs less, and has more empty space for second-row passengers to get on and off.
But the door is fine, but there is also a scary name called suicide door.
With the development of automobiles, the speed of vehicles has greatly increased, and you know that in the early days of vehicles, there were no seat belts. Therefore, when the vehicle collides and the door is opened abnormally, the passengers in the car are easily thrown out of the car, and the shortcomings of the rear door method begin to be exposed. The main reason is that our vehicle is driving forward, the doors are reversed, and the airflow backwards creates a huge amount of energy. If the passenger opens the door by mistake, the door that is subjected to huge force will pop open instantly, resulting in the probability of an accident.
scissor door
When it comes to scissor doors, Lamborghini is the first thing that comes to mind and can be said to be one of its symbols. This kind of door takes the top as the axis and opens directly upwards. The doorway is avant-garde and fashionable, giving people a feeling of pulling the wind. However, due to the defects of the supporting mechanism, the early scissor doors required a lot of force to open, and the manufacturing cost was also high.
Lamborghini isn't the first car factory to use scissor doors, however. Alfa Romeo (Broadcom Design) was the first to open the scissor door. Unfortunately, this model was not mass-produced at the time, and eventually Lamborghini was done.
In the 1990s, Bugatti's EB110 also adopted the scissor door design (it was indeed designed by Lamborghini designers), but for the consideration of manufacturing cost and practical value, Bugatti's rear models all adopted the ordinary door opening method.
The biggest difference between the straight doors is that the hinges are installed in different positions, so basically all models can be modified with scissor doors. Many ordinary models and even sports cars will be modified in this way, so it is a matter of opinion.
gull wing door
The gull door opens upward with the roof as the axis, and when opened, it looks like a wing about to spread its wings, which is also a very attractive design.
The most impressive is the Mercedes-Benz 300SL, which is the originator of the gull-wing door and one of the classic models of Mercedes-Benz. The SLS AMG launched by Mercedes-Benz also inherited the characteristics of the gull-wing doors.
Also, Mazda K-car sports car AZ-1 also adopts gull-wing door design. Does it look cute and cool?
It stands to reason that gull-wing doors are also standard for sports cars, but there are always some depots who like to "go with the sword". For example, Lincoln's new Navigator concept car uses a gull-wing door design (but the production version was canceled). Now we see that the rear door of Tesla Model X also adopts a gull-wing door design, which is more practical and intelligent. The distance sensor on the door will Adjust the posture of the "wings" in time to ensure that it does not touch nearby vehicles.
butterfly door
This door, which resembles a gull-wing door, is one of the supercar's favorite combos. Like the scissor door, the Alfa Romeo was the first to be built. The 33 Stradale was the first mass-produced butterfly door model (this time it's finally in production). Compared with gull-wing doors and scissor doors, butterfly doors have a larger opening angle, which is more conducive to passengers getting on and off.
Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, McLaren F1, Ferrari LaFerrari, BMW i8 all use butterfly door design. Are the created visuals completely different? McLaren is arguably a big fan of butterfly doors, and all of its models are designed this way.
You might think that all supercars use butterfly doors, with one exception. The Toyota Sera, which was only sold in Japan from 1990 to 1996, is probably the only car other than a sports car to use butterfly doors.
Revolving door, front door, canopy door
These three kinds of doors are rarer than the previous ones. Revolving doors are a feature of Koenigsegg models. Opening the door requires three actions: abduction, rotation, and forward push, which seems troublesome but very avant-garde. The doors open at 90 degrees, a feature that reduces the number of open empty rooms in the car for easy entry and exit. But the shortcomings are equally obvious, the design is complex, the cost is expensive, and it is destined to be equipped only by the top super sports car.
The very, very rare front door is one of the most famous of the BMW isettas. The total sales of this tricycle of 160,000 units also made it the best-selling BMW in the 1950s, making a huge contribution to BMW's post-war recovery and becoming a generation of classic models.
The design principles of the canopy door are based on the design of fighter jets. The opening methods include side opening and forward opening. It blends the roof with traditional doors. There's no need to block the view with the A-pillars here. The front windshield also surrounds the cockpit without distraction, providing better driving visibility. In addition, the previous door design is not lost in the styling design. However, in the event of a rollover accident, this kind of door is the fatal blow.
